Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) Classes for Adults
Our adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) classes are led by experienced instructors and follow a structured training system focused on technical progression. Training is suitable for both beginners and more experienced practitioners.
What Are Our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Classes?
Our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) classes are structured training sessions designed for adults who want to learn, practice, and progress safely in grappling and ground-based martial arts. Training focuses on positional control, submissions, escapes, and live drilling under instructor supervision.
Classes are run as group sessions with a clear structure, making them suitable for both beginners starting from scratch and experienced practitioners refining their technique. Instruction follows a progressive approach, ensuring students build solid fundamentals before advancing to more complex movements and sparring.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training is ideal for adults looking for a technical martial art that develops skill, control, and physical conditioning without relying on strikes.
Adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Classes (All Levels)
These Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes are open to adults of all experience levels, from complete beginners to advanced practitioners. Training takes place in structured group classes led by experienced instructors, with a focus on technical progression, positional understanding, and controlled sparring.
Students with prior grappling experience may integrate directly into regular BJJ classes. Adults with no previous experience typically begin with our Grappling Initiation class, which is designed specifically for day-one beginners and introduces core movements, safety principles, and fundamental positions.
From there, students progress naturally into regular Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes, where training intensity and technical depth are adapted to individual level, experience, and goals.
Women-Friendly Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Classes
Our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes are open to women of all experience levels and are taught in a professional, respectful, and structured training environment. Female students train alongside adults under clear coaching supervision, with an emphasis on safety, technique, and controlled progression.
Training focuses on leverage, positioning, and technical efficiency rather than strength, making Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu particularly suitable for women seeking a practical and structured martial art.
Beginners are introduced gradually through our initiation and fundamentals pathway, allowing new students to build confidence before advancing into regular group classes.

About Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Originating in Japan in the late 19th century, the fighting style was originally known as Jujutsu. It later evolved into Judo and eventually into what is now known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ).
In the early 20th century, Kodokan Judo master Mitsuyo Maeda travelled the world demonstrating his art and challenging practitioners from other disciplines such as boxing and wrestling. He eventually arrived in Brazil in 1914.
While living in Brazil, Maeda taught Judo to Carlos Gracie, who then passed the knowledge on to his brothers, including the youngest, Hélio Gracie.
Due to his smaller size, Hélio adapted the techniques to rely more on leverage, timing, and positioning rather than strength. This evolution led to the modern form of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, where ground fighting and technique allow a smaller practitioner to overcome a larger opponent.
Today, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is practiced worldwide as a martial art, a competitive sport, a fitness discipline, and for many practitioners, a way of life.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Ranking & Belt System
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu uses a structured belt system to represent technical skill, experience, and progression over time. Advancement is based on consistent training, technical development, and instructor evaluation rather than fixed timelines.
Adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Belt Progression
The adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu belt system typically progresses through White, Blue, Purple, Brown, and Black belt levels. Each belt represents a deeper understanding of technique, control, and strategy on the ground.
Progression Focused on Long-Term Development
Progression in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu emphasises consistency, technical precision, and problem-solving rather than rapid promotion. This approach encourages sustainable development and long-term mastery of the art.
At Monarchy MMA we follow the IBJJF official belt grading system
