You will learn this modernized art from our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belts Bruno Barbosa, Vanderlucia Barbosa, and Arielson Ozama.

No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu is the modernized form of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). The Gi is a traditional uniform worn in BJJ, whereas in the No-Gi variation, you wear a rash guard and shorts.

This causes you to have variations in your usual grappling moves as you cannot grip onto your opponent’s clothing. In short, it’s a mash-up of BJJ, Wrestling, Sambo, Judo, and many other ground disciplines into one style.

Come learn the ins and outs of this extremely fun martial arts HERE in Monarchy MMA.

The difference between No-Gi and BJJ

Without the use of a Gi, fighters lose a lot of the grips, submissions and sweeps they’d be able to use in BJJ. This makes the discipline a lot more dynamic. There is a lot more movement and position changes, estimated up to 20-30% more.

Also with the two different competitions, each with their own rulesets, IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation) and ADCC (Abu Dhabi Combat Club), which is the biggest No-Gi tournament, the difference in the sports has grown.

In an IBJJF tournament certain moves, eg. heel hooks and knee ripping, are prohibited and would result in disqualification, whereas in the ADCC tournaments, these are allowed moves.

Benefits of No-Gi

Apart from the obvious reasons why No-Gi BJJ is a good sport to learn, like self-defense, or taking it on as a sport, there are plenty of physical and mental benefits. So, if you’re still wondering whether to take the leap or not, here’s some pros:

  • Cardio: No-Gi training focuses your mind and body on technique. You get stronger and fitter faster, as compared to running on a treadmill for the same amount of time. This not only makes it easier to get in shape but also more fun!
  • Confidence: Learning a martial art doesn’t only work on your body, but also your mind and mentality. Knowing that you can defend yourself gives you some much-needed confidence.
  • Stress: Having a good roll on the mats forces you to clear your mind so you can focus on your technique. Subsequently, it takes focus away from any ongoing stress you might be experiencing outside the doors of the gym.
  • Discipline: As with many martial arts, you’ll learn discipline. Whether it’s from sticking to your routine or achieving your goals within your training, discipline plays a major role in No-Gi too.
