Muay Thai, Thai Boxing, or more commonly known as “the art of eight limbs”, is one of the oldest and most effective striking arts on the planet.

Most martial arts utilize some for of graduation or ranking system (such as belts) which allows students of the art to measure their knowledge and skill progression.

In typical Muay Thai programs, there is no ranking system until someone progresses to the level of what would be a Black Belt in most martial arts systems. In order to provide a more structured Muay Thai program, Monarchy has adopted the Krang ranking system as in Muay Thai Gyms in Brazil which utilizes a 9-step program from beginner (White Krang) to Master (Black Krang).

This is the same graduation system famously followed by fighters such as UFC Champions Anderson Silva, Mauricio Shogun Rua, Charles DeBronx, and others. Monarchy is the only gym in Malaysia that offers a well organized system of Krang ranks worn on the left arm with certificates for all of the nine ranking steps.

The progression of ranks is slightly different for Adults than for Kids (click here to know more about the Muay Thai ranking for kids lands on the kids classes page ). For adults the growth sequence is white, white/red, red, red/light blue, light blue, light blue/dark blue, dark blue, dark blue/black, and black (master level). Above black there are the ranks of black/white and black/gold.

History of Muay Thai

Muay Thai’s popularity grew in the 20th century when Thai fighters started competing in Muay Thai and mixed discipline tournaments and fights across the” world, one of the main styles being kickboxing due to its similarity.

But the combat style dates back to the 18th Century, where it was used during the wars between the Burmese Dynasty and Siam.

And it was when a great warrior, Nai Khanomtom, was captured and became famous within the Burmese ranks due to his fighting style that he was given the opportunity to fight for his freedom. After knocking out ten opponents, he was freed and returned to Siam where he was hailed a hero, and his style was named Siamese-style Boxing, and later Muay Thai.

It was only in the 19th Century when King Rama V rose to the throne and brought peace and prosperity to Thailand that Muay Thai evolved from war combat to a form of personal advancement and physical exercise taught across the country, and now the world.
Today there are thousands of gyms across the globe that teach Muay Thai. The art of Muay Thai has led to the creation of of similar but different forms of kickboxing such as K1, American kickboxing, International rules kickboxing, Sanda/Sanshou. Savate, forms of Karate, Letwei, Pro Taekwando and Dutch Kickboxing.

Muay Thai tends to have a larger striking arsenal, including elbows, throws, catching kicks, clinching and repetitive knee strikes. In kickboxing, punches and strikes have equal point scoring whereas Muay Thai kicks are given more points. Although Muay Thai has takedowns those do not include hip throws or leg grabs as seen in Judo or Wrestling. The Muay Thai style of fighting tends to be more “in your face” combat with short range punching and elbows which can be applied to close quarters combat situations in MMA or in self defense. Muay Thai and other forms of Kickboxing form a very core part of any MMA or self defense training.

Our one-time Striking Introduction class session for Day 1 beginner will explain the difference stated above with better visual examples.

As you progress further, you will slowly start to realize that your mindset and attitude will change. Intense Muay Thai sessions are the perfect remedy for a bad day elsewhere.
  • Cardio / Weight Loss: Training is physically demanding, and every session will will give you a great cardio workout. Whether its the punches, kicks, elbows, or sparring sessions – everything you execute while training Muay Thai is a great form of fitness will get you in shape in no time at all.
  • Hip Mobility: The twisting and turning during your training sessions will benefit you in the long run. A lot of us develop tight hips due to a mixture of bad posture, lack of stretching, and just normal age progression. Muay Thai is one of the most fun ways to improve joint mobility while at the same time providing a great cardio workout. All our classes start and end with various stretching activities to reduce the chances of injury.
  • Clinch-striking: Unlike other martial arts, Muay Thai fights typically use a lot of strikes from the clinch. You will learn how to neutralize your opponents attacks through a clinch and how to set up your strikes from the clinch using your elbows and knees. The ability to engage and disengage from clinching will upgrade your distance management when it comes to fighting stand-up.
  • Self Defense: The close quarters aspects of Muay Thai, with clinches, knee strikes, elbow strikes and short distance punches are very practical for real world attacks and self defense on the street. Muay Thai is a foundational part of many self defense systems.
  • Increase reaction awareness: Unlike Taekwondo, which don’t allow kicks to the legs, and Karate, which don’t allow punches to the face, Muay Thai will get you used to attacks from all limbs targeting various parts of your body, and will teach you how to defend and counter attack those efficiently.
