The History of BJJ

Originating in Japan in the late 19th Century, the style of fighting was originally called Jujutsu which later became Judo and eventually Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ).

It was the early 20th century when Kudokan Judo master Mitsuyo Maeda traveled the world demonstrating his art of “jiu-do” and challenging fighters from different disciplines such as boxing, wrestling and various other martial arts and eventually landing in Brazil in 1914.

Maeda stayed with Gastao Gracie, who was helping him get established in Brazil, and in return he taught Carlos, Gracie’s eldest son, Judo. Carlos then taught his younger siblings including the youngest, Helio Gracie.

Due to his smaller size, Helio had to adapt and thus created an offshoot of Maeda’s style to favour leverage over strength and size. And the modern style of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu where fighting on your back gives you an advantage was born.

Today BJJ is more than just a sport, it is practiced across the world as a martial art, a way to promote fitness and build character, and also a way of life to many.

Benefits of BJJ

Apart from picking up a new self-defence skill there are a tonne of reasons why BJJ could be the next thing you need on your workout/fitness wish list.

  • Full-body workout: Rolling for an hour uses a large number of your muscles, thus improving your functional fitness. Training more regularly will improve mobility, endurance, and over time, you are guaranteed to feel your body change.
  • Confidence: Besides noticing significant changes physically, BJJ boosts your confident tremendously. Your self-esteem is positively affected as you cope with ways on how to defend yourself in difficult situations.
  • Mental Health: BJJ is one of the finest ways to curb with stress. Stress occurs too frequently in this era, and stepping on to the mats will make you shift your focus away from these negative thoughts. Besides that, it is one of the sport which truly teaches you the value of patience. In BJJ, its more about the process rather than achieving a particular goal. As long as you are willing to stick to your training, you will continue to get better.
  • Fun: A typical BJJ lesson includes rolling right until you can’t anymore, and more often than ever, your teammates or Professor will share a word with you on ways you can improve before your next session. Embrace the sport alongside like-minded students at Monarchy MMA classes, and even though it might feel gruelling at times, it is all fun at the end of the day.
