How well do you know yourself? How prepared are you to face difficult situations?
Krav Maga is a wide self defense system that deals with how to defend against violent attacks and weapons. More importantly, Krav Maga also teaches prevention, de-escalation of situations and how to avoid them.
“I know MMA. Isn’t that enough?”
While knowing martial arts or knowing how to combine them does have an advantage, you can never tell how a real life situation will unfold. Martial arts, is organised and systematic, linear. Your capabilities in MMA are tested within controlled environments whether in hard sparring on the mats or in competition in the cage or ring. There are very technical aspects in each martial art; the direction of your footwork, the way your arm should extend out in a jab cross or hook, how you can cut angles, pivet or changing levels to go in for a takedown. But how do you use those skills in an attempt to defend against an attack from a random person on the street who comes swinging at you from different directions or worse, several attackers from different directions? This is in no way dismissing martial arts as self defense. In fact, it strengthens your foundation, your base knowledge as a self defense practitioner because you have already acquired the basic knowledge of attacking and defending. Or,very simply put, ‘fighting’.
We train in Boxing with trained partners who are familiar with boxing, just to get that one opening. In training, we learn how to generate a KO punch in a very short and precise distance. Boxing fights go up to 12 x 3 min rounds just to get that one opening. Imagine being in a street altercation with that kind of training and the person throws a wide open haymaker. Self defense teaching has too many skills to be applied in one technique that must be dessicated into patterns, trained and mastered for a street fight situation. For example, a front neck entanglement will teach you to get rid of the entanglement, punch and knee the groin. The punch itself is a maneuver that can be imitated as a movement, but its efficient affect needs to be practiced through repetitive experience. The same goes for entanglement with grappling skills and knees with Muay Thai skills. Self defense is the application of all the skills in a street situation. There is no time for warm ups, it could be a surprise attack with multiple opponents. The attack could even occur in a narrow space like in between two cars or in an elevator. When you go for your first BJJ class, no matter your belt color, you will end up tapping a number of times. So imagine how much easier it would be to neutralise an attacker in the streets.
However, the point of learning Krav Maga is not to fight in the streets and put on a technical show for passers by. It is to prevent (if possible) any physical confrontation and defend yourself against an attack without obtaining (any serious) injuries.
Krav Maga training prepares you for adverse conditions in different types of situations. In training, you use variations of basic defenses using the main principles of Krav Maga to deal with variations of the problem whether its an attack from the side, rear or from different directions. In Level 1 of Krav Maga training, stance, movements and basic strikes are taught. These strikes and stance can also be learnt in Boxing or Muay Thai. This contributes to part of your foundation in Krav Maga.
As you progress throughout the levels in Krav Maga, more variations of the basic principles are taught defense against grabs, headlocks and tackles. There is also the possibility of an attacker using a weapon or concealing more than one. Krav Maga educates you in tactical behaviour and again, awareness and prevention while preparing you through simulation and tactic. When sparring with a partner, you become more aware of the various possible outcomes and rhythms. It is highly improbable to learn through drilling or sparring with a non-resistant partner or even against movements learnt from an Alfred Hitchcock movie. Krav Maga does emphasize on safety in training while learning these defensive techniques. You not only learn how to cause injury (as means to buy some time to run) but also how to avoid getting injured yourself. You also learn how to fall without sustaining serious injuries.
Bare in mind, it does take some getting use to the motions, rhythm and conditioning of self defense.
